[Profile] TUNESDAY—Surviving on Music
By Ng Pei Chyi | March 20, 2014 01:06AM

MELBOURNE  His pursuit of passion began when he took his first step out of his comfort zone.

Without a common language and support from familiar faces, that is when his love for music truly speaks.

Nodding shyly to every compliment from the audience, his cheeks blush. But I hear no more than a “thanks” when a member of the audience tries to strike a conversation with him.

“I tried to converse with my audience, but our conversation would...... >>Read more

[Op-Ed] Stop the Brain Drain. Be Truly 'ONE Malaysia'
By Ng Pei Chyi | May 01, 2014 07:45PM

Brain drain is not a new issue in Malaysia. Chief Minister of Selangor, Abdul Khalid warned the federal and state governments to make local talents feel appreciated in Malaysia, as he foresees another round of brain drain with the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) coming into force next year. Sadly, speaking from the experience of a citizen who lived in the country for over 18 years, I doubt that the situation can be reversed, at least not in the near future. Brain drain is a vicious cycle and there are always reasons to why a country is losing its talents. In Malaysia’s case it is racism......  >>Read more

[Review] A Bona Fide Good Time at ChilliPadi
By Ng Pei Chyi | May 24, 2014 09:22AM

Thick, grainy texture and a delicate fragrance of coconut screamed authenticity as the sauce touched my picky taste buds. The chicken was so smooth and tender as well, with every bite of it oozed goodness. It’s perhaps the best curry chicken in town that I have tasted. And it went perfectly with the fluffy coconut rice.

Located on Menzies Alley, a rather remote corner in Melbourne Central, Chillipadi is a hidden gem many could possibly walk pass without noticing, but it is also a place where most students would frequent after their first visit. Not only because of its genuine Malaysian food and excellent service, but also...... >>Read more

[Travel] A Dummy's Guide to Enjoying Some Peace in Melbourne City
By Ng Pei Chyi | May 21, 2014 05:12AM

Touring the city in a round trip and then, back to the same spot – that is what the City Circle Tram is meant to be. I like how I do not need to research which tram goes to which places beforehand or busy checking out the blue dot on my Apple map when I am travelling. Above all, I like how I won’t get penalised for not tapping my Myki card because The Tram Is Free.

It is old, noisy, warm and a little shaky as compared to the newer trams. Clickety-clack sound that the tram produces when moving on the tracks may give a hunch that its timber frame is going to fall apart anytime, but many would relish its quaint ambience. In fact, it is a must-have ride as you won’t be able to...... >>Read more

[PNA] The Apple of My Eye
By Ng Pei Chyi | March 20, 2014 01:06AM

I exited the mall, couldn’t make out where I was headed or where I needed to be heading. My heart was numb. My mind was in a stupor. And my eyes were dry as though it had been emptied earlier before. I felt strange inside as I called my mum and told her I was going home......Music began. Camera zoomed in to an apple on the table and then, it panned from left to right. From a sketchbook, a school uniform with blue stains on it, to a guy tucking his shirt, clipping cufflinks on both his sleeves.

Before the male lead’s face was revealed, my phone rang...... >>Read more

[Profile] She Made Her Hobby A Living

HONG KONG – Tired of her hectic and low-paying job, Candy Yip took her first step into the business world eight years ago. Even better, she managed to turn what she loves – tofu – into a good living.

“Have you realised there aren’t many tofu desserts in Hong Kong?” As a huge fan of tofu, Yip said that was what got her started experimenting making desserts with tofu.

Located in the tranquil neighbourhood of Tin Hau, the 36-year-old’s brainchild, Auntie Sweet, has grown to become...... Read more>>

[News] HK September CPI Up 6.6%; Inflation to Remain Contained in Near Term
By Ng Pei Chyi | November 14, 2014 09:23AM

HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s headline consumer price index rocketed 6.6% in September from a year earlier, the Census and Statistics Department announced Thursday, mainly due to the low base of comparison resulted from the Government's payment of public housing rentals in September last year.

The year-on-year price increases in September 2014 were recorded for electricity, gas and water, mainly because some households had used up the full amount of Government's one-off electricity charge subsidy. The CPI reading was below the median forecast by 12 private economists, which called for a 6.5...... Read more>>
